Happy Thursday Friends! The weekend is almost here and I am so ready for it!
Yesterday was filled with doctor appointments and shots and tests for me, thank goodness it was all being done at the hospital. I arrived at the hospital first thing in the morning because I had so much to get done after my appointments, since my family is coming in town today, I wanted to be the first patient in line. I like to get in and get out! Too much to do to wait around!
I got checked in and then I was taken to the lab so that I my thyroid could be checked (I have hypothyroidism, and it gets checked on a monthly basis to make sure everything is ok) and to have my gestational diabetes test, and to get a Rhogam shot. The shot is for mother's to be who have a negative blood type AND the father to be has a positive blood type. You HAVE to have this shot. It is difficult for me to explain properly why you need it. I understand what it means, I just have a hard time explaining. To find out more click here.
Rhogam shot.
I was given the sugary liquid to drink for my gestational diabetes test, and it wasn't that bad. I just chugged it as fast as I could. Then I had my blood taken for my thyroid test.
So far, so good.
I was then taken to the infusion room, to have the Rhogam shot administered. As I was waiting in the lobby I started to not feel well. I just assumed it was because I was getting hungry. No big deal. I was told not to eat before the gestational diabetes test so that the test would be as accurate as possible. So I shrugged off the nauseous feeling.
A few minutes later I was called into the infusion room and was able to sit in a large comfy chair before the shot was administered.
Before the nurse could give me the shot, I got really nauseous. And everything started to get "fuzzy". I told her I wasn't feeling so hot and she gave me some water and told me to focus on my breathing.
Now, I have NO problem with getting shots. I am fine in hospitals. I just assumed I was feeling sick because I was starving.
I told the nurse I was feeling better, and to go ahead with the Rhogam shot.
That is the last thing I remember.
I passed out.
Cold.
The next thing I knew I was waking up with an IV in my arm and oxygen in my nose. 3 doctors and multiple nurses were standing over me making sure I was ok.
I have never been so scared.
I immediately touched my belly and felt baby move and was so happy to know that he was ok!
Apparently my blood pressure dropped to 61/29, and the rapid response team was called to make sure that baby and I were ok. I did have chest pains when I woke up, but it went away very quickly. Apparently that is normal when you pass out because your body starts pumping extra adrenaline which can lead to some chest pain.
Thank God I was in a chair that could recline when I passed out and did not fall and hurt the baby! And thank goodness I was in the hospital when it happened!
The doctors and the nurses at the hospital were amazing!
Of course, this was the ONE time husband could not make it to my doctors appointment with me. He had a business meeting out of town 3 hours away. So, I was there by myself. Which of course, makes everything even more scary.
At least baby boy is ok. He was being monitored and everything came back normal! Thank God!
Also, when I woke up and felt that baby was moving and felt sure that he was ok I asked the nurse to make sure they took my blood for the gestational diabetes test, because before I passed out, they had not taken it yet. The nurse told me that they had in fact taken my blood when I was passed out. Thank goodness, because there was NO WAY I was going to take the glucose drink again. Ever.
That was the whole reason I passed out. Too much sugar on an empty stomach. My blood sugar spiked, and then crashed. And then I passed out. Not a fun morning.
At least baby is ok. That is all that matters to me.
And my blood results came back normal for gestational diabetes! So I do not have to take the BIG 3 hour test!!!
So, that was my day. I got nothing else done the rest of the day because the majority of it was spent at the hospital! So much for my to-do list!!
